Becoming a Weight Watcher Leader

Summer of 2011 Hannah did the thing I feared most she resigned as a leader! Suddenly we had a new leader at Turnhams farm. After a long talk with her and my Hubby I decided that actually what I wanted to do was take over from her. So there started the whirl wind experience of becoming a leader.

After going through the interview procedure where I had to do a presentation on my weight loss story, I was offered the job! I was so eager to become a leader that I pushed to go to the training weekend in Leeds. Couple of weeks later on the 2nd September 2011 I was off to leader on the training weekend.

Due to my long journey I had travelled up the night before, was quiet strange being in a hotel by my self and then spending the weekend with complete strangers. Overall the weekend was interesting and differently a roller coaster of emotions!

Back from the weekend I had my 1st proper meeting visit with in Woodley with the lovely Sue, who happened to be my old leader’s Leader! At that meeting I had to help weigh then give the 30 minute talk! Next was Pangbourne with the lovely Nicki and then to Early with Jackie. I had a Saturday admin training session and then 4th and final meeting visit was back to Pangbourne. We then had our final workshop before my final assessment on 12th October, which I passed!

I think my time helping Hannah at Turnhams really helped. There are 3 or 4 jobs being a helper at a weight watchers meeting.
1)     Greater, giving out members cards and signing up new members
2) Weigher where you help the leader weigh members, normally this happens at very busy meetings
3/4) Shop & Clark some meeting do this together. So the shop person sells all the products and recommends things to people and the Clark takes the fees and sells months passes

Then I was a fully fledged weight watcher leader! Next stop was delivery of all my stock! And let me tell you, you get loads! I kept my meeting stock at mine and then any extra stock was kept in my mum’s garage due to the lack of space at my old house! I wasn’t given a meeting to take over instead I had to look for places to open new ones, until then I just did cover meetings.

So on the 7th January I opened a meeting at Whitley Wood Community Centre and on the 11th January I opened at Goring Village Hall. What WW don’t tell you is they don’t really give you any help finding venues, organising helpers etc so I had to rely on friends and family to help until I managed to find some helpers.

I have to say that neither meeting ever really took off but Whitley was worse than Goring. On the 21st July my self and the area manager decided to close Whitley. So I then went to running 1 meeting a week to for me to be honest that was fine as I was just about to start another exciting journey.

Around the middle of September 2012 being a leader and going through IVF finally got to much as I was struggling to run my meetings so I decided to take some time off. The finally after finding out I was pregnant I decided that I didn’t want to carry on being a leader due to the lifting etc so I resigned.

I have to say that although I loved my time as a leader it’s not all that simple.

Things you should know about being a WW leader:

  •     You need a decent size car for all the equipment you have to carry including
  •   Scales
  •        New member packs I had 1 small lock and store box
  •        Shop stock – I had 2 large lock and store boxes and 3 small ones
  •        Clark bits including Cash tin with at least £20 float in it in small change - I had 1   small lock and store box
  •        Member materials – I had 1 small lock and store box
  •        Table clothes
  •        Back board
  •        Various other bits
  •          Before every meeting you need to prep for that meeting making sure u have stock ready
  •          After every meeting u have to
  •        Complete and return your tally
  •        Do your banking
  •        Add new members to your txt anywhere system
  •        Send out care note, txts emails
  •          You then also have to:
  •        Complete a timesheet
  •        Attend area meetings normally for 2 hours every month
  •        Attend training events as and when
  •          Money is ok much better if you have a highly busy meeting
  •          You have to find your own helpers, train them etc
  •          If you need cover for your meeting you have to find it

Would I do it again? Um unsure but I do suggest that you don’t have a full time job as well.

My Weight Watchers Journey

Looking at me above you are probably wondering why I joined weight watchers.

Well in 2009 it might surprise you to know that I was 91 lbs heavier than I am today and I looked at bit like this.

This is me in 2008/2009, I was just hitting 30 year old, I was a size 20 bricking on a size 22, I weighted 15st 4lbs and had a BMI of 40. That was until I joined weight watchers and changed my life forever. I’m not sure how I got to a size 20, leaving school I was a nice size 14 and loved exercise but over the next 15 years my love for food and booze grew
but my love for exercise turned into hate.

In early 2009 after a lot of badgering from the girls at work I started to exercise again by joining at aerobics, I think I did it to shut them up really. After a few months I loved it but I didn’t love still seeing my wobbly body in the mirror.

Over a coffee one lunch time with a colleague from work, she told me how she’s lost 2 stone with weight watchers, as they had taught her how to eat better and suggested I gave it ago. Returning from the coffee I went straight onto the weight watchers website and signed up for a monthly pass.

That Saturday the 9th May 2009 I went along to the nearest meeting to my home the one at Turnhams Farm. There I meet the lovely Hannah the leader and lots of other people like me.

After the meeting I felt really inspired, so I went home and got my black marker pen out and wrote the points values on all the food in my house, I continued with this for most of my journey.

At the end of my 1st week I was shocked to discover I’d lost 4lbs. That week I decided that the only way I was going to be able to do this was to break down what I had to loss into small goals and aim for those. So my first goal was to achieve 5% weight loss and in order to do that I had to loss 11 lbs. I also decided to buy my self a pot of dreams and put in a £1 for every lb I lost and £2 for every lb I gained.

One meeting Hannah asked us all to set our selves a small goal to aim towards, I remember saying what I wanted most was to be able to shop in the skinny peoples shops so I could go shopping with my best friend, as I hated not being able too.

I once had a dreadful shopping trip to London with her and other friends, she was trying to help us find an outfit to wear for her wedding, we’d spent most of the day looking in all the nice skinny people shops and I wasn’t able to find anything as I was too big, by the end of the day when we went to a shop that had clothes that would fit me I’d had enough. I hated being the fat friend!

By June 2009 the weight was steadily coming off and I’d lost 10.5lbs and by the annual trip to Royal ascot on the 27th June I’d hit my 5% target and a week later I hit my 1st stone! I was so over the moon that I decided to treat my self to a new bracelet. I decided to continue to reward myself for every stone I lost.
In July 2009 I took part in my 1st every Race for Life in Reading with the girls from work, we all decided to walk the 5k and where pleased that we completed it in 53 minutes. By now I’d lost 21.5 lbs and my energy levels where increasing!

By December 2009 I’d lost 3 stone, I’d gone down 2 dress sizes to a size 16 and I was finally able to buy my 1st pair of skinny jeans and knee height boots, as until now I’d been too uncomfortable to buy any. This was a huge milestone to me!

One of my biggest supports has been my husband, he’s been my rock throughout my journey. Always asking me why I was eating something and if I could eat it and also stopping me from ordering the slice of carrot cake in a coffee shop.

But I’ve also had great support from my fellow members at Turnhams Farm. We constantly support each other through the ups and downs, I’ve made some great weight watcher friends along the way. Together in Dec 09 we complete a 3k Santa walk in Reading

By February 2010 I’d lost 50lbs and I was over the moon when Hannah presented me a certificate to mark my achievement in front of everyone. I couldn’t believe how far I’d come.

A Few weeks later Hannah asked us again to set ourselves a small goal and the only thing that sprang to mind for me was I wanted to be able to wear a dress for the annual trip to Ascot.

By June I’d lost 66lbs and I was finally back to a size 14, a size I’d not been since leaving school.

I was finally able to shop in the skinny peoples shops along side my best friends. We had a great girlie day out at Westfield finding the perfect Ascot dresses. For me this was what made losing all the weight worth while!

In July 2010 along with the girls from work again I took part in my second race for life. As I was now fitter than I been in years we all decided to try and jog it, twice a week for 8 weeks we meet up after work and trained together and that year we managed to complete the 5k in 32 minutes, knocking off 21 minutes from the year before. I was so proud of what I’d achieved

By the end of August 2010 I’d lost 75lbs and once again Hannah presented me with a certificate. All my certificates from Weight Watcher are now kept in my wardrobe along side a photo to remind me of where I’ve come from and a size skirt 20.

By September I was a size 12 and weight 9st 13lbs. I confidently went on my 1st girlie holiday in a long time. I had a great time as I was no longer the fat friend! I was now the same as all of them.

It took me 581 day but finally on the 9th December 2010 I reached my goal weight of 8st 11lbs.

I’ve had my ups and downs, shed a few tears, had a few gains and 4 new sets of clothes but now I’m happier than I ever have been and proud I can say I’m a gold weight watchers member.

For me the biggest thing has been not seeing weight watchers as a diet but as a way to change the way you eat forever and that’s why I think I have been so successful. I’ve always been honest with my self about what I’ve put in my mouth and have always pointed everything no matter how bad I have been I’ve had great support throughout my journey from my husband, my family, Hannah and my other fellow members at Turnhams farm.

Pregnancy Wk 27

How Far along?  27 weeks

Total weight? 11 stone 2lbs

Gain/measurments: up 2stone 6 lbs from 8.11

bump size round the middle: 100 cm

Maternity Clothes Had to order some new black work trousers last night as my size 10’s are now cutting into me, ordered those from Mothercare as they do a short length though at 5’1 I still have to take them up, I also brought 2 new tops as they were on offer buy one and get one ½ price. One was a Mr Bump t-shirt, although my hubby doesn’t like them I decided I care I was getting one anyway.

Other Purchases made this week: I got sent a £5 gift voucher from Mama’s and Papas so went in there Tuesday and brought Baby Hanno’s 1st pram toy. For the house we finally found our breakfast bar chairs so have ordered those

Stretch Marks: I’ve been really lucky I’ve not had any. Think this goes back to the fact I lost loads of weight a couple of years ago so my belly is used to it, though my Hubby does laugh at my tattoo I had done last year as that has differently stretched.

Sleep: Interrupted as normal, finding myself waking up at least twice a night to go to the loo at the moment and then sometimes finding it hard to go back to sleep

Best moment this week Not really had any

Worse Moment this week Think Tuesday was my worse day mainly due to being shattered. Ended up having to get hubby to help my cook dinner and then went to bed at 8:30

Pregnancy Classes attended this week: None

Movement At the beginning of the week I was worried as I wasn’t feeling much, phoned the midwife and she said that was quite normal not to feel much before 28 weeks. Also hubby’s work friend told him that boys move less than girls. But as the week has gone on movement has increased. He loves my bladder and often I find I need a sudden wee or my bladder hurts. I can differently feel him kicking, normally happens after eating and during the day, Hubby still not been able to catch a kick since 3rd March.

Food Cravings None really, I get moments when I really fancy something like fish and chips last night but nothing weird or ongoing

Anything making you queasy or sick? No

Labour signs: None thanks god though not sure I would know what they were

Symptoms: I’m getting aches and pains again around my pelvis, I know my fitness levels have decreased

Belly button in or out? In still

Wedding ring on or off? On still does remind me to check to see I can still get off

Mood over week? Been ok

Looking forward to: Saturday and seeing my close friend and going to the NCT sale with her in Henley

Miss anything? No

Baby clubs I joined

You get lots of vouchers and when you buy a packet of certain nappies in 2013 you get a free changing bag (this is quite small and I brought another one, but will probably leave this in the car with the odd bits in)

Tesco baby club - http://www.tesco.com/babyclub/
Not sure what I got but think mostly vouchers

Again not sure what I got

This is the club from the packs you get form the midwife, I do get weekly emails with lots of offers

Apta baby club -

I got a cute pola bear as of 2013

I got a cute cow as of 2013

You get a voucher for a pack when you buy certain nappies, Hubby an I looked at the pack as contained quite a few baby wipes so we decided not to bother

You get lots of money off vouchers

Again not sure what I got

This was probably the 2nd best club I joined after Boots, on website there are 3 vouchers for packs that you collect from Boots or Argos with lots of freebees in.

avent due date club - http://www.duedateclub.co.uk
Not sure yet but I hear your meant to get a free feeding bottle, the club is just a forum.

I would say if you can differently join think a years membership if £30 and for that you get access to their website information and loads of events and gatherings like the NCT nearly new sales that happen every couple of months, they are a place where you can buy 2nd hand items.
Also you can just do a parenting course with them but they do cost about £220. I was told it was worth paying that just to meet other mum 2 be’s

Buying baby bits & other Baby Shows

Prams:
We'd already started looking at prams asking our friends what they recommended too. We found one the My 4, then found the orb then found the oyster. We decided that our best bet was a trip the Oxford pram centre as they had a good selection of them. I would differently recommend going somewhere like this an independent company as they had a good range.  Finally we decided on the mamas and papas Urbo. Oxford had an amazing offer on but decided to walk away and think about it the following weekend when we finally decided yep that was the one the offer was over :-( but decided that we'd just have a look at the baby show instead.

The baby show 23rd Feb 13 Excel London:
So along with hubby and both granny's we went to the baby show. I had a list of items to look at of things my best friend had suggested.

I really enjoyed it, my only comment was there clearly not enough places to sit and rest and very little refreshment choice in the show but the excel had a great selection outside the show. We parked in the Victoria Dock car park and made the sort walk to the excel, mainly because this wasn’t pay and display but if I ever drove there again I would park in the pay and display car park under.

Top buys: well be brought our Urbo pram with car seat adapters and foot muff from Kiddcare www.kiddicare.com/

I ended up finding this gorgeous changing bag from Momymoo:

I also brought bababing lobo bouncer

http://www.bababing.com/shop/products/lobo-plum.htm

I was also highly recommended to get checks wipes by my best friend and this means not spending hundreds on baby wipes over the years, you basically use them and wash them:

Couple of baby grows

I also got a free set of tommee tippee feeding bottles when I signed up to 12 months of Prima Baby magazine for £20 http://www.tommeetippee.co.uk/product/bottle-feeding-kit

I brought a simple blue star changing mat as my nursery theme is blue stars based on a cot bumper set I brought from Laura Ashley

I also brought a lock for my pram and nana why brought baby this!

Although I didn't buy one at the show only due to fact they didn't have any designs I looked I also have brought a travel grobag this was again recommended by my best friend. It's basically a sleeping bag for baby's http://www.gro-store.co.uk/grobag-baby-sleep-bag/travel-grobags.html

Hubby and I decided that bar the pram, cot and grobags that we were happy to have everything else 2nd hand if possible. Therefore eBay has become my new favourite shopping place. You can get so many bargains on there and pick up hardly used items very cheaply. I think the main thing on ebay, like everything know your prices! I've also managed to get nice maternity bits from there.

Mothercare Event 27th Feb 2013
Mothercare held mum to be events at various stores across the UK Readings was on the 27th Feb. When we arrived we were given a goodie bag with a 10% off voucher attached. In the bag was various items including lots of breast pads. The main reason for going to the event was to look for a cot bed. We found and brought the Darlington Cotbed in white with the Spring interior Mattress with removable cover. We were lucky and got extra off as
the furniture and mattress had and extra 20% off.

I also brought a few other bits including another sleepbag.

Good deals:
Boden I got sent a voucher for £15 and was able to buy a little outfit

Vertbaudet I had various vouchers but managed to buy a couple of bits and got a free changing bag

2nd trimester! Weeks 14 – 25

Christmas was good, think it was made better knowing that this would be our last on our own.

We did get some bad news in this time that one of hubby’s work colleagues had lost her twins, this hit us quite badly. So I think that wait until the 20 week scan was the worse.

Lucky at 16 weeks you get your 2nd midwife check up and you get to hear the heat beat for the very 1st time, unfortunately Hubby was unable to attend mainly due to me booking the delivery of the dishwasher.

Finally 31st January 2013 arrived and had a count down to the scan. This was the all important one where we to find out if we we’re team pink or blue! I hadn’t brought that much by now only 2 little outfits and a little bunny. At the scan little one was wriggling quite a bit but obviously wanted us to find out what it was, although it didn’t give us any nice pictures. Before hand I wanted a girl most and Hubby wanted a boy.

It was official we were team BLUE!

Next day I went to mothercare and brought the below

Deep down I did knew it was going to be a boy as we couldn’t be that lucky and also I think the boys name had come a lot easier than the girls, always think that’s a sign.

1st thing I wanted to do is go and tell my mum and Dad, so we headed straight there after the scan. Mum was over the moon and so was Dad, think he was even more touched by the fact our chosen name was James Peter Hannington. James for Chris’s great granddad and Peter for his granddad any my dad.

We’ve just had our 25th week check up though it was done at 23 weeks due to us being on holiday on my 25th week. Was amazing watching hubby’s face when the doctor played the heart beat.

Bump ar wk 16

Bump at week 23

I’m pregnant 1st trimester! Weeks 1 - 13

Oxford called me back on the Friday and got me booked in for my 1st scan which was going to be 29th October. So I had to endure another 2 week wait! The 2 weeks waits have to be the worse. I always feel for the other IVF girls who go through this.

On the 19th October I had my bosses wedding with my pregnant work colleague; it was very strange seeing them after being off work for 2 weeks. It was fine we all had this unwritten deal that we didn’t speak about it, none of them asked if I was or not, of course they had all known about the IVF. I actually really enjoyed the day even though I was driving, we ended up leaving about 9:30pm as I was shattered, I sure they had all guessed by the amount of times I went to the loo. I did manage to let it slip to our table as I wasn’t drinking even though it was my friends wedding and also I couldn’t eat the chocolate dessert as it had egg in it and you have to make sure it’s cooked through http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/foods-to-avoid-pregnant.aspx

On the Monday 22nd October I returned to work and told my bigger boss my news mainly due to the fact that I needed the following Monday am off for the 6 week scan. I also had a chat with my pregnant colleague, it was nice she understood and we discovered we were exactly 10 weeks apart.

I was pretty much tired most of the time and feeling nauseous. By the Thursday morning 25th Oct I was suffering from really bad cramps, I hadn’t been in so much pain in ages and was worried so I called Oxford, they explain that was normal but to put my mind at rest I could go and get scanned. I knew hubby had important meetings so called my mum who couldn’t take me so next best thing was the MIL, to be fair she was great, came and picked me up and took me to Oxford. I was nervous again as I know it would be an internal scan so I went in alone, but thankfully scan was ok and got to see my perfect little bean.

I was so happy I called Hubby who was relieved. I was then booked in for scan 2 on the 12th November this time at Reading. Thankfully hubby got to come with me this time it looked like a tiny jelly baby. It still felt so unreal. I was then released from Oxford into the care of the NHS. Our due date was confirmed as the 19th June 2013, but of course I’d already known that as I found a wonderful website where you could work it out http://www.ivf.ca/duedate.php

I had arranged for a girlie shopping trip with my best friend and other friends to Westfield on the 17th November. It was so funny, you could tell they wanted to ask but didn’t dare. I did have a hard time when they were looking at clothes and I couldn’t really and in certain shops I snuck off to look at maternity stuff as I was finding the my belly was already swelling, by lunch time I caved and told them. They were over the moon. They had all known about the IVF but we hadn’t told them the exact dates, the only people who did know bar me and Hubby were my boss and my Mum.

On the 22nd November 2012 I had my 1st midwife appointment, I remember joking with her that at oxford we were known as a number, she said it wouldn’t be like that with her, but the joke is that actually I felt more cared for by Oxford than I do with her! Hubby came with me and we ran through all the booking in forms and were given a number to call and book the all important 12 week scan. This was booked for 1st thing on the 6th December. Another nervous wait but both was ecstatic to find out beanie was still all ok and growing perfectly! We were then booked for our 20 week scan on the 31st Jan.
